We crossed the English Channel in a very "James Bond" mode, by Hovercraft! It was an interesting and rather exciting experience. The Hovercraft can be heard before it is actually seen. We watched ours approach us, getting larger and louder as it got closer. Finally it exited the water and blew right up on the pavement in front of us. After a short time, the fans stopped (and the noise), then the air left the bottom on the craft and it dropped several feet. The Hovercraft is large, it carries cars, trucks and even a bunch of tired cyclists. We had to load last, after the cars, stacking our bikes right side up in a pile long the side wall. We were then told to go in and sit in any seat. Of course we all drifted to the front, hoping to get a view. We soon found out, there is no view, only the spray of the water. Within a few moments we were on way, once the craft got out to sea, there was nothing to see. Larry and I sat back and fell asleep, enjoying the hum of the engines and the gentle rock of the water. Unfortunately the ride was less than 30 minutes. We would have enjoyed a longer ride and more importantly, a longer nap!
to be continued...go to England. |
